Are You Oestrogen Dominant?

Updated: Sep 4, 2023

Understanding the Imbalance:

Estrogen dominance, also referred to as unopposed estrogen, is a hormonal imbalance characterised by an excess of estrogen in relation to progesterone. Both estrogen and progesterone are essential female sex hormones that work in harmony to regulate the menstrual cycle and maintain overall health. When this balance is disrupted, it can lead to a range of symptoms and potential health issues.

Common Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance:

  1. Irregular Menstrual Cycles: Estrogen dominance can lead to irregular periods, heavy bleeding, or skipped cycles.

  2. PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome): Increased estrogen levels can exacerbate PMS symptoms like mood swings, irritability, and breast tenderness.

  3. Breast Tenderness: Swelling and discomfort in the breast tissue.

  4. Fibrocystic Breasts: Development of non-cancerous lumps or cysts in the breast tissue.

  5. Weight Gain: Estrogen dominance is associated with weight gain, particularly around the hips and thighs.

  6. Fatigue: Excessive estrogen can contribute to fatigue and low energy levels.

  7. Mood Swings: Mood disturbances, including anxiety and depression, may be more common.

  8. Insomnia: Hormonal imbalances can interfere with sleep patterns.

  9. Headaches: Frequent or severe headaches, including migraines.

  10. Digestive Issues: Estrogen can impact gut health and contribute to symptoms like bloating and constipation.

  11. Hair Loss: Some women may experience hair thinning or hair loss.

  12. Decreased Libido: A decrease in sexual desire and vaginal dryness. Ray Peat's Perspective on Estrogen Dominance The late Ray Peat is one of my favourite voices for metabolic health. His approach to hormone balance centers on a few key principles: 1. Progesterone as a Balancing Hormone: Peat emphasizes the importance of progesterone, often referred to as the "balancing hormone." It plays a critical role in counteracting the effects of excess estrogen. 2. Importance of Thyroid Health: Peat believes that optimal thyroid function is essential for maintaining hormonal balance. A well-functioning thyroid gland supports the production of progesterone and helps regulate estrogen metabolism. 3. Dietary Factors: Peat emphasizes the significance of specific dietary choices and their impact on hormone levels. He suggests that certain foods can help promote hormonal balance while others can disrupt it. The Raw Carrot Salad Remedy One of Ray Peat's dietary recommendations to address estrogen dominance is the consumption of a raw carrot salad. He suggests that this simple but powerful remedy can help support hormonal health in several ways: 1. Fiber and Gut Health: The raw carrot salad provides dietary fiber that can support gut health. A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for proper estrogen metabolism and elimination. 2. Natural Estrogen Detoxification: Carrots contain natural compounds known as polyacetylenes, which may assist in detoxifying excess estrogen from the body. 3. Anti-Inflammatory: Carrots are rich in antioxidants, including beta-carotene, which can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, factors that can disrupt hormonal balance. 4. Gut Bacteria Nourishment: The fiber in carrots serves as nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria, promoting a balanced gut microbiome, which can play a role in hormonal regulation. 5. Thyroid Support: Peat suggests that the raw carrot salad may have a beneficial impact on thyroid health, which, as mentioned earlier, is integral to hormonal balance. How to Make Ray Peat's Raw Carrot Salad Creating Ray Peat's raw carrot salad is remarkably simple: Ingredients:

  • 1-2 organic carrots, peeled and grated

  • Fresh lemon juice (from 1 lemon)

  • Coconut oil (1-2 teaspoons)

  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Grate the organic carrots into a bowl.

  2. Squeeze the juice of one lemon over the grated carrots.

  3. Add 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil.

  4. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt to taste.

  5. Toss the ingredients well to combine.

  6. Allow the salad to sit for about 30 minutes before consuming. This resting period may enhance its health benefits.

I reccomend everyone gets regular hormone check-ups if they are experiencing any symptoms. You can request these through your GP or a functional healthcare provider such as myself. There are some fantastic tests out there today such as DUTCH testing, which goes above and beyond the standard hormone pathology. If you suspect you're oestrogen dominent, why not give Ray Peats raaw carrot salad recipe a whirl for a month or two and see if you experience any benefits!
